Are you maximising your investment in your teenagers?

As my 19-year-old son walked out the door this morning, he said “When we’ve got a minute, I’ve got some ideas on updating your SEO strategy.”
 
This is free, on-tap knowledge willingly handed over on a regular basis by someone who’s in the business of web site design (on high days and holidays when not in lectures). This student son and his slightly older IT consultant brother are also my key to unlocking the answers to daily questions about marketing strategies, social marketing, SEO marketing and much, much more.
 
When you’re a one-person copywriting business, it’s immensely difficult to keep up with the rapid changes taking place in technologies, marketplaces and customer needs. There’s a lot of information out there, but it’s tough knowing what’s reliable and what’s nonsense, let alone finding time to research and read it all.
 
 It’s just bliss to have the boys living at home, so I can pin them to an office chair and ask them about what’s going on in the world. “What’s the difference between keywords and meta tags?” “How often should I be blogging and what does it do for me?” “Do I need to worry about BeBo?” And even the more prosaic “How do I get my pdf files to open with the latest version of Adobe Reader?”
 
It’s a view that’s supported by an interview by the Financial Times with the outgoing marketing chief at Unilever. Simon Clift talks about the “lost generation” of brand managers who do not understand the web and social networks. They’re the 30-45 year olds, who are too old to carry Facebook and Twitter in their DNA, but too young to have children who are at ease with social networking and the way the web is moving.
 
So I think I'm getting at least some return from my investment in housing, feeding and student fees - are you?
